Most Wickets in Test Cricket 2025: Just like 2024 and the years before it, 2025 continued to be a bowler-dominated year in Test cricket. With valuable ICC World Test Championship points on offer, home teams prepared pitches that heavily assisted bowlers, making life difficult for batters.
Batting struggles were further highlighted by technical flaws and poor temperament, especially against quality bowling attacks. As a result, taking wickets became far more frequent than it was a decade ago.
Despite this overall trend, a few bowlers stood out with exceptional performances, playing key roles in match and series victories, particularly in away conditions.
South Africa enjoyed a historic year, winning their first ICC trophy of the 21st century by defeating Australia in the WTC 2025 final, and also securing a Test series win in India for the first time since 2021. England drew their home series against India but struggled badly in the Ashes, while Australia dominated the West Indies 3–0. Strong individual displays also came from Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe.
Let’s take a look at the top five wicket-takers in Test cricket in 2025.
Top 5 Bowlers With Most Wickets in Test Cricket 2025
5. Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah had a limited Test season in 2025, featuring in just eight matches due to a back injury and subsequent surgery. Despite the restricted appearances, he finished with an impressive 31 wickets at an average of 22.16, the second-most by an Indian bowler that year.
Bumrah picked up three five-wicket hauls, two against England and one against South Africa. However, India ended up losing all three of those matches.
4. Taijul Islam
Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam was his team’s standout performer in Test cricket during 2025. He claimed 33 wickets in six Tests at an average of 26.
His performances included five-wicket hauls against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, once again proving his value as Bangladesh’s most reliable red-ball bowler.
3. Blessing Muzarabani
Zimbabwe played more Test cricket than usual in 2025, and Blessing Muzarabani made the most of the opportunities. The tall fast bowler finished the year with 42 wickets in 10 Tests, averaging 26 per wicket.
Muzarabani recorded three five-wicket hauls, coming against Ireland, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, establishing himself as Zimbabwe’s leading pace threat.
2. Mohammed Siraj
With Jasprit Bumrah missing parts of India’s five-Test tour of England, Mohammed Siraj rose to the occasion. He played a decisive role in India’s two Test victories, including delivering the match-winning spell in the final Test at The Oval.
Siraj ended 2025 with 43 wickets in 10 Tests at an average of 27. Both of his five-wicket hauls came in England, and he finished as India’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket for the year.
1. Mitchell Starc
Mitchell Starc was the standout bowler of Test cricket in 2025. With Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon unavailable for parts of the Ashes, Starc led Australia’s attack brilliantly.
He played a key role in Australia winning the first three Ashes Tests and earlier in the year produced devastating spells in the West Indies, including a memorable hat-trick.
Starc finished 2025 as the leading wicket-taker, claiming 51 wickets in 10 Tests at a remarkable average of 17.15. His haul included three five-wicket innings, two in the Ashes and one in the West Indies, where he registered astonishing figures of 6/9 in Kingston.
