The year 2025 turned out to be historic for cricket, with several long-standing records being shattered across formats. From Joe Root achieving rare Test milestones to England registering the biggest ODI win ever, fans witnessed some truly unforgettable moments.
Let’s take a closer look at the major cricket records broken in 2025.
Top Cricket Records Broken in 2025
Joe Root Breaks Multiple Historic Test Records
Joe Root enjoyed a phenomenal run in Test cricket and went on to break several records that even Sachin Tendulkar could not achieve.
Root scored 50 or more runs in 12 consecutive Test matches, surpassing Tendulkar’s best streak of ten. This remarkable run between 2016 and 2017 highlighted Root’s unmatched consistency at the highest level.
He also became the first player to score a century in both innings of a Test match at Lord’s, achieving scores of 143 and 103 against Sri Lanka in 2024. Despite scoring 51 Test centuries, Tendulkar never managed a hundred in both innings of a single Test.
Additionally, Root now holds the record for the most catches by a fielder in Test cricket, with 213 catches, far ahead of Tendulkar’s 115 in 200 Tests.
England Smashes 304: One of the Highest T20I Totals Ever
England rewrote the T20I record books in 2025 by posting 304/2 against South Africa in the second T20I of the series. This became the highest T20I total by a Full Member nation and only the third instance of a team crossing 300 in men’s T20Is.
Phil Salt and Jos Buttler put on a blistering 126-run opening partnership in just 47 balls. Salt scored an unbeaten 141 off 60 balls, the highest T20I score by an England batter and the seventh-highest overall. His century came in just 39 balls, the fastest by an English player. Buttler added a rapid 50 off 18 balls, the third-fastest fifty for England in T20Is.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Matches a Rare Don Bradman Record
Yashasvi Jaiswal delivered a historic performance in the second Test against the West Indies, scoring an unbeaten 173 on Day 1. With this knock, he matched a feat last achieved by Don Bradman 93 years ago.
Jaiswal registered his seventh Test century, with five scores of 150 or more. He became the first player since 2000 to record five 150-plus scores before turning 24. Only Bradman had more at the same age.
He now has the second-most 150-plus scores in World Test Championship history, behind Joe Root, and is tied with Graeme Smith for the most Test centuries by an opener before turning 24.
Mitchell Starc Reaches 400 Test Wickets in Record Time
Mitchell Starc achieved a historic milestone during his 100th Test match against the West Indies at Sabina Park.
He struck three times in the opening over, reducing the West Indies to 0/3, only the sixth time this has happened in Test cricket. Starc picked up his 400th Test wicket by trapping Mikyle Louis lbw, becoming the fourth Australian to reach the mark after Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, and Nathan Lyon.
Two deliveries later, he completed a five-wicket haul in just 15 balls, setting a new record for the fastest five-for in men’s Test cricket.
Virat Kohli Becomes the Fastest to 14,000 ODI Runs
Virat Kohli once again proved his greatness by becoming the fastest player to reach 14,000 ODI runs on February 23, 2025.
He achieved the milestone in just 287 innings during India’s Champions Trophy match against Pakistan in Dubai. Kohli sealed the moment with an unbeaten 100, his 51st ODI century, finishing the match in style with a trademark cover drive.
He bettered Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 350 innings and Kumar Sangakkara’s 378 innings, also becoming the fastest in terms of balls faced.
England Register Biggest ODI Win Ever
England created history by defeating South Africa by 342 runs in the third ODI at Southampton, the largest margin of victory by runs in ODI history.
After scoring 414 runs, England bowled South Africa out for just 72. Jamie Smith provided a quick start, Joe Root scored his 19th ODI century, Jacob Bethell registered his maiden hundred, and Jos Buttler chipped in with a brisk fifty.
South Africa collapsed early, slipping to 18/5 and then 24/6. Jofra Archer claimed four wickets, while Brydon Carse picked up two, as South Africa narrowly avoided their lowest-ever ODI total.
