Shubman Gill Career Overview
Shubman Gill was born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab. Like many young cricketers from Punjab, he grew up idolising Yuvraj Singh, who later became his mentor. Gill first grabbed national attention during the 2018 U-19 World Cup, where he served as India’s vice-captain. He scored 372 runs in just six matches at an incredible average of over 120, playing a key role in India’s title win.
Later that year, Gill was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL for ₹1.8 crore. Alongside his IPL journey, he was performing consistently for Punjab in domestic cricket. At just 20 years old, he became the youngest captain to lead a team to the Deodhar Trophy final.
Gill made his international debut in January 2019 in an ODI against New Zealand in Hamilton. However, he struggled for consistency and spent nearly two years out of the national side.
His big comeback came during the Australia tour in late 2020, where India needed a young, fearless top-order batter. Gill grabbed the opportunity and made an immediate impact in both Tests and ODIs.
Meanwhile, in the IPL, Gill was growing steadily with KKR, scoring back-to-back 400+ run seasons in 2020 and 2021. His career took a major turn when he joined Gujarat Titans in 2022. There, he transformed into one of India’s best top-order batters.
By 2023, Gill had established himself as a regular in ODIs and Tests, effectively replacing Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order. That year, he made his T20I debut and delivered a historic IPL season, scoring 890 runs, the second-highest total in a single IPL season.
With his elegant stroke play and calm presence at the crease, fans began calling him the “Prince”, seen as the heir to Virat Kohli’s “King” status. Gill also had a solid 2023 ODI World Cup, finishing the year as the highest run-scorer in ODIs worldwide.
In 2024, Gill was named the captain of Gujarat Titans in the IPL. In just his second season as skipper, he successfully led the team to the playoffs.
In 2025, Gill achieved another major milestone by becoming the captain of India’s Test team, officially marking the beginning of a new chapter in Indian cricket.
