The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced a major leadership change in its T20I setup, appointing opening batter Ibrahim Zadran as the new captain of the national team. The decision comes ahead of Afghanistan’s upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka.
With this appointment, star leg-spinner Rashid Khan has stepped down from the role after leading Afghanistan in the shortest format. The change follows a challenging T20 World Cup campaign for the team.
Zadran previously served as vice-captain under Rashid Khan, which makes him a logical successor. Having been part of the leadership group for some time, he is already familiar with the team’s structure and expectations.
Rashid Khan Captaincy Era Comes to an End
Rashid Khan has been one of Afghanistan’s most influential players and leaders over the past few years. As captain, he led the team in several important tournaments and bilateral series.
However, after the recent T20 World Cup campaign did not meet expectations, the Afghanistan Cricket Board decided to move in a new direction with its leadership.
Despite stepping down as captain, Rashid remains a crucial part of Afghanistan’s squad. As one of the world’s best T20 bowlers, his experience and match-winning abilities will still play a key role for the team.
Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka Series 2026: Schedule and Venues
Afghanistan’s next challenge will be a white-ball series against Sri Lanka. The series will feature three T20 Internationals followed by three One Day Internationals.
The T20I matches are scheduled for March 13, March 15, and March 17, while the ODI matches will take place on March 20, March 22, and March 25.
The games are expected to be played in Sharjah and Dubai. However, the Afghanistan Cricket Board has stated that it is closely monitoring the regional situation in the Gulf region.
The board has mentioned that discussions are ongoing with venue authorities and relevant cricket boards, and a final confirmation regarding venues and dates may be announced soon if any adjustments are needed.

What Ibrahim Zadran’s Captaincy Means for Afghanistan
Ibrahim Zadran has been a consistent performer at the top of Afghanistan’s batting order and is known for his calm and composed approach at the crease.
Having spent several years in the national setup, he understands the team environment well. His leadership style will now be closely watched as he begins his captaincy tenure with the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
For Rashid Khan, stepping away from captaincy opens a new chapter in his career. While he will no longer lead the team on the field, his influence and experience will still be extremely valuable for the younger players in the squad.
The upcoming series against Sri Lanka will provide the first real test of Zadran’s leadership and could shape the future direction of Afghanistan’s T20I team.
