Glenn Maxwell Career Overview
Glenn Maxwell was born on 14 October 1988 in Melbourne, Australia. He made his mark in domestic cricket at the age of 21, quickly gaining attention for his explosive batting. Known for scoring rapid half-centuries in under 20 balls, Maxwell stood out as one of the fastest run-scorers in Australian cricket.
His performances in domestic leagues across Australia and England earned him recognition, and in 2012, he was picked in both the Big Bash League and the IPL. That same year, Maxwell made his ODI debut for Australia against Afghanistan in the UAE, followed by his T20I debut against Pakistan a month later. In March 2013, he played his first Test match against India.
By then, Maxwell had built a reputation as a limited-overs specialist, which led to the Mumbai Indians signing him for over $1 million in the IPL. He won the IPL title that season, but his biggest achievement came in 2015, when he was part of the Australian team that won the ODI World Cup.
In 2014, Maxwell lit up the IPL while playing for Kings XI Punjab, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous big-hitters in the world. Although he stopped playing Test cricket after 2017, his white-ball career continued, even after a brief absence from the national side.
Despite his inconsistency, Maxwell remained a player every opposition feared. His ability to change a match on his own made him invaluable. This was best shown in the 2023 ODI World Cup, when Australia were almost out of the tournament against Afghanistan. In a near-impossible situation, Maxwell played what many consider the greatest ODI innings ever, scoring a match-winning double century and keeping Australia alive. They eventually went on to win the World Cup.
Earlier, he was also part of Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup-winning squad, further cementing his legacy in white-ball cricket.
As of now, Glenn Maxwell continues to play T20Is for Australia and remains a regular feature in franchise leagues around the world. His retirement from ODI cricket on June 2, 2025, marks the end of a thrilling chapter in limited-overs cricket.
