Kusal Perera is one of Sri Lanka’s most dynamic limited-overs batters and a former ODI captain. Known for his aggressive stroke play and fearless approach at the top of the order, Perera was a key member of Sri Lanka’s ICC World T20 2014–winning squad, playing a crucial role in one of the country’s greatest cricketing achievements.
Born with natural right-handed instincts, Perera later switched to left-handed batting, inspired by his childhood idol Sanath Jayasuriya. That decision went on to shape his explosive career across formats.
Kusal Perera Early Life and Cricket Journey
Kusal Perera received his education at Kottawa Dharmapala Maha Vidyalaya before moving to Royal College, Colombo, where he represented the school in the prestigious Royal–Thomian cricket match. His performances at the school level earned him selection for Sri Lanka’s Under-19 team, laying the foundation for a professional career.
He later joined Colts Cricket Club, where his consistent domestic performances pushed him into national contention. In January 2012, Perera earned his maiden Sri Lanka call-up for the Australia tour after an injury to Kumar Sangakkara. His calm unbeaten 22 at the Gabba helped Sri Lanka clinch a memorable low-scoring ODI victory.
Kusal Perera Records and Achievements
One of Perera’s most iconic moments came in 2019, when he produced a historic 153 against South Africa at Durban* in the first Test. Chasing a daunting target, Perera added an unforgettable 78-run last-wicket partnership with Vishwa Fernando, guiding Sri Lanka to a stunning win.
That innings was:
- Ranked the second-best Test innings of the decade by Wisden
- Named the Best Test Performance of 2019 by ESPNcricinfo
Earlier highlights include:
- A first-class double century and a blistering 336 off 275 balls in domestic cricket
- Maiden ODI century in Mirpur (2014), helping Sri Lanka whitewash Bangladesh 3–0
- A 17-ball half-century vs Pakistan (2015) at Pallekele, equalling Sanath Jayasuriya’s record for Sri Lanka’s fastest ODI fifty
Perera made his Test debut against India in 2015, scoring twin fifties—becoming only the second Sri Lankan batter to achieve the feat on debut.
In May 2021, he was appointed Sri Lanka’s ODI captain ahead of the Bangladesh series.
