Shreyas Iyer is one of the most underrated Indian cricketers of the past few years. Despite being a regular member of the Indian cricket team, he often does not receive the recognition or fanfare his performances deserve. A batter of Iyer’s quality would be an automatic selection in most international teams around the world, yet in India’s highly competitive setup, he has rarely been a guaranteed pick.
Nevertheless, Shreyas Iyer remains one of the most promising middle-order batters in world cricket. Alongside his batting credentials, he has also established himself as a capable leader, captaining his domestic side and multiple IPL franchises. Here is a detailed look at his career statistics and journey so far.

Shreyas Iyer Career Overview
Born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, on December 6, 1994, Shreyas Iyer was introduced to cricket at an early age, much like many other young talents from the city. He first gained widespread attention during the 2014 ICC Under-19 World Cup, where he scored two half-centuries in just three matches.
Ahead of the 2015 IPL season, Iyer was signed by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for ₹2.6 crore at just 19 years of age. He made an immediate impact, scoring 439 runs in his debut IPL season at an average of over 33, including four half-centuries. That same year, he dominated domestic cricket, finishing as the highest run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy with 1,321 runs at an outstanding average of over 73.
Rise in International and IPL Cricket
Strong domestic performances earned Iyer a call-up to the Indian national team. He made his T20I debut against New Zealand on November 1, 2017, in Delhi, followed by his ODI debut against Sri Lanka a month later in Dharamshala.
Iyer’s stature in Indian cricket continued to grow rapidly. During IPL 2018, he was appointed captain of Delhi Capitals midway through the season. Over the next three years, he achieved a historic feat by leading the franchise to three consecutive playoff appearances—something no previous DC captain had managed.
In February 2020, Iyer scored his maiden international century, a superb ODI hundred against New Zealand. By this point, he had become a mainstay in India’s limited-overs setup and one of the most reliable middle-order batters in the IPL. In November 2021, he made his long-awaited Test debut against New Zealand in Kanpur, scoring a century in his very first match.
Recent Years and Leadership Success
Ahead of IPL 2022, Shreyas Iyer joined Kolkata Knight Riders and delivered a solid first season as captain. After missing the entire 2023 season due to injury, he made a remarkable comeback by leading KKR to their third IPL title in 2024.
On the international stage, Iyer was a key member of India’s squad during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he played a match-winning knock of 100 in the semi-final. Although he briefly fell out of the national team in 2024, he returned strongly in 2025 and finished as India’s highest run-scorer in the Champions Trophy.
IPL Record and Future Outlook
In 2025, Shreyas Iyer became the second-highest-paid player in IPL history when Punjab Kings acquired him for a massive ₹26.75 crore. With this move, he captained his third IPL franchise to the playoffs, underlining his leadership credentials once again.
Still in his prime, Shreyas Iyer continues to be a vital asset for India across formats and one of the most influential figures in the modern IPL era.
